Are facials safe enough ?

A good facial can be a very relaxing and refreshing experience if done the right way. However, a treatment at an unhygienic or unsanitary parlour could leave you with an infection.
Here are a few things you should look out for during your facial sessions:

  •  Make sure they have changed the sheets and the dressing gown you’ve been handed is a fresh one. Don’t hesitate to point these things out.
  • Make sure the towels used to wipe your face are fresh and clean. Old towels might contain an older client’s skin cells and dirt. Disinfection of towels is a must.
  • Cotton used to clean the face or neck should be fresh and taken out of a fresh bale of cotton or a fresh bag of cotton balls.
  • Don’t be fooled by product containers. Just because the bottle carries the name of a renowned cosmetic giant doesn’t mean that they actually have those products. Sometimes parlours, in order to cut corners, simply fill these good looking bottles with cheap products that may be very bad for your skin.
  • Instruments used on you during facials – tweezers, massager heads, blackhead removers etc. should be autoclaved (autoclave is a sterilising instrument). Don’t believe your beautician if she says that passing an instrument through steam is enough. Steam takes about 15-20 min to kill bacteria and autoclaving is a much faster and safer option. Ensure that the instruments are autoclaved.
  • The hair tie or hair band used to push hair off your forehead can also be a source of scalp infection and rashes.  A hair band used on multiple people can be a source of rashes and scalp infections. It can also lead to other skin-related ailments around the forehead and check area.
As innocuous as a facial might look there are some hidden dangers that you need to watch out for. Be careful and only visit parlours that are well-known, well-maintained and those that you’ve gone to before. Avoid going to places that offer huge discounts, they are the ones that are more likely to follow unhygienic cost-cutting practices

Why is nutrition such an issue now a days?

If I eat three health meals a day why should I even think of using supplements? This seems logical. Eat well and you will get everything you need from your diet and will stay healthy.  Sadly it is no longer correct. For our parents that may have worked, but things have changed. Once upon a time vegetables were grown in your garden and animals grew up in fields. I say “once upon a time” but it is only 40 or 50 years ago that this was basically true. Now we find that vegetables are grown in depleted and often contaminated soils. They are nurtured with chemicals to get best production but the trace elements that are so important to our long term health are not in the soils to begin with and son the plants cannot put them into the vegetables and fruit that we buy.
